Dating back to 1896 when it was originally calculated by Charles Dow, the Dow Jones Industrial average refers to a price weighted average of 30 stocks on the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange. The oldest company contained in the Dow Jones Industrial Average is General Electric, which was added on November 7, 1907.
